What is a dental crown and what are the types of crowns?

A dental crown is a cap that covers a tooth, improving its appearance, shape, and strength. Installing a crown is a common dental procedure that can be performed by a general dentist.

There are several types of dental crowns, including ceramic, porcelain-fused-to-metal, gold, and resin. Ceramic crowns are popular because they look like natural teeth and are suitable for people with metal allergies. Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns are strong and durable but can show a dark line at the gum line. Gold crowns are also durable and long-lasting but are noticeable when you smile. Resin crowns are affordable but are not as durable as other types of crowns.

At Vaksman Dental Group we specialize in CEREC same day crowns which offer the best result at a reasonable cost and without the usual wait time.

Why CEREC same day crowns are your best choice

Most types of crowns will require you to wait for several weeks for them to be ready. During that time, you are fitted with a “temporary crown”, which are not comfortable and often fall out requiring multiple trips to the dentist. What’s more, conventional crowns require impressions to be taken, which then have to sent to a lab. These impressions are not precise and the lab work is generally unstable when the dentist seats the crown into place.

That is why based on our experience we suggest a more convenient and precise option for our patients – same day crowns. These crows are called CEREC, which stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. We use computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology to create a CEREC crown in just one visit, saving you a lot of time.

When would you need a dental crown?

You may need a dental crown if you have a large cavity, a broken or cracked tooth, a worn-down tooth, or a tooth with a large filling. Your dentist may also recommend a crown after a root canal or to cover a dental implant.

If you’re experiencing pain or discomfort with a dental crown, it’s important to see your dentist right away. A loose or damaged crown can cause further damage to the tooth, and a cracked or chipped crown can expose the underlying tooth to decay or infection.

Dental crowns are a reliable and effective way to restore damaged teeth and improve your smile. If you have several damaged teeth that require replacements, a dental bridge could also be the best option for you. Check out this page to learn more about bridges.
